Spinodal Decomposition for the Cahn-hilliard Equation

چکیده
The Cahn-Hilliard equation is a fourth-order parabolic partial differential equation that is one of the leading models for the study of phase separation in isothermal, isotropic, binary mixtures, such as molten alloys. When a spatially homogeneous alloy is rapidly quenched in a physical experiment, a fine-grained decomposition into two distinct phases is frequently observed; this phenomenon is known as spinodal decomposition. A simple linear analysis about an unstable homogeneous equilibrium of the one-dimensional Cahn-Hilliard equation gives heuristic evidence that most solutions that start with initial data near such an equilibrium exhibit a behavior corresponding to spinodal decomposition. In this paper we formulate this conjecture in a mathematically precise way, using geometric and measure-theoretic techniques, and prove its validity. We believe that this is the first rigorous treatment of this phenomenon.

Spinodal decomposition and coarsening fronts in the Cahn-Hilliard equation
We study spinodal decomposition and coarsening when initiated by localized disturbances in the Cahn-Hilliard equation. Spatio-temporal dynamics are governed by multi-stage invasion fronts. The first front invades a spinodal unstable equilibrium and creates a spatially periodic unstable pattern. Secondary fronts invade this unstable pattern and create a coarser pattern in the wake. We give linea...
متن کاملGeneralized Cahn-hilliard Equations Based on a Microforce Balance
The Cahn-Hilliard equation is very important in materials science. It is a conservation law which describes important qualitative behaviors of two-phase systems, namely, the phase separation process in a binary alloy. This phenomenon can be observed, for instance, when the alloy is cooled down sufficiently. One then observes a partial nucleation (i.e., the apparition of nucleides in the materia...

The dynamics of the Cahn-Hilliard equations for a ternary alloy are studied during the phase separation process. The results show a primary spinodal decomposition followed by coarsening and then possibly a secondary spinodal decomposition.

We present a numerical study of the spinodal decomposition of a binary fluid undergoing shear flow using the advective Cahn-Hilliard equation, a stiff, nonlinear, parabolic equation characterized by the presence of fourth-order spatial derivatives. Our numerical solution procedure is based on isogeometric analysis, an approximation technique for which basis functions of high-order continuity ar...
